50K or Stage race? A choice to make
I have had 4 weekends of long runs in a row that are pretty much a success. 20 milers each time.. I struggled big time on the back half of this weeks long run, which was clearly due to the fact that I ran with some guys who were only running 12-14 miles and not 24. They ran what would have been a sub 6 hour pace for a 50k, and the 50k has 5,000 feet of elevation gain. No joke. It also did not help that 16 miles into my run the high school XC kids showed up and starting zipping around the trails, all fresh and fast, and high schooly.. ugh.
Somewhere in the middle of my 3rd lap on the course my mind got mad at me and started to play tricks. I started thinking, “what if I do not really want to run the 50k. What if I want to run the Stage race the following week instead? The Dirt Cheap Stage Race is my favorite event in Rochester. It’s all trails, it’s awesome.
Basically it goes like this :
Saturday at 9am – A 3 mile super hilly time trial. Runners go off every few seconds not knowing what place they are in until EVERYONE is done.
Saturday at 1pm – A tough, hilly, mass start 5.5 mile trail run.
Sunday at 9am – an 11 mile trail race through most of the park.
It’s not an ultra, but it’s unique, its affordable, and it’s a blast. I have trained for an ultra, which means I might be able to put in 4 or 5 weeks of speed work, and do really well in the Stage Race.
I am not sure how I got to this little cross roads. I am not sure why my mind started in on me about the Stage Race…. but it really hasn’t left over 24 hours later…
So. I have some decisions to make. I will talk to some people, go for a few runs, and then make a choice. What would you do? Ultra, or Ultra awesome weekend of racing??
