Killian Jornet not running Western States 100
Following a mountain accident that claimed the life of one of his best friends, Kilian Jornet will not be racing at this years Western States 100 race in which he is the defending champion. The Sacremento Bee has a brief explanation here
According to the bee;
Jornet had been traversing Mount Blanc with three-time world mountaineering champion Stephane Brosse over the weekend when a ridge collapse claimed Brosse’s life.
It brings to light just how fragile life is. Jornet is known for his love and massive respect for the mountains. He is also considered the worlds best Ultra Runner. I can only hope that the mountain taking his close friend does not change his respect nor his love for the mountains and that after he grieves for his friend he will come back ready to take on the worlds best runners again.
This was the first stage of the “Summit of my life” movie that the team was taking on, attempting to break the speed climb records for a number of peaks. For information on that click this link here.
Only Jornet knows whether or not he will continue in this effort, I imagine that will be a gruelling decision. This is a tragic reminder of the dangers of mounteneering. I am saddened by the loss and hope Jornet recovers from what he saw.
The trailer ends with a question of what are we looking for… To be alive? How fitting. I am sure at the moments before the accident, they never felt more alive.
This is why I run, this is why I hike and climb. It’s why they did as well.
In times like these, the only thing to do is to simply keep on keepin on.
